San Elizario’s present-day chapel was completed in 1882 after some flood and national unrest. In 1850 San Elizario became the first seat of the El Paso County government. The chapel reflects the influence of European architectural styles on the earlier, box-like missions of the region. This large, elevated adobe structure anchors the plaza and the substantial stock of adobe buildings that comprise the San Elizario Historic District. The beautiful white washed walls of the district contrast the El Paso blue skies.
